While in some developed countries more than 60% of the waste is sent to landfills, in developing countries the destination is still observed from waste to landfills or open burning, while concern about recycling remains without consolidated government actions or other mitigating actions. In countries such as Brazil, Colombia and Mexico, recycling is carried out by recyclers or urban recyclers, informal workers who take up this activity due to unemployment and poverty in these regions. Due to the problems involved in the entire collection and recycling process, it is essential to use technologies that favor the professional practice of collectors of recyclable materials, combining popular knowledge with scientific technical knowledge, social organization and society participation, of better health and occupational conditions for this range of society. Thus, a systematic review is proposed to identify the use of technologies that contribute to the improvement of the health and safety conditions of solid waste handlers after their conventional disposal. The effect of these two methods was assessed at the level of risk perception (perceptions of susceptibility, severity, barriers and benefits), safety behaviour (safety compliance and safety participation) and OSH knowledge. A sample of 212 workers was divided in three groups: one experimental group and two control groups (passive and active). In order to evaluate the effect of safety and health training in the different dependent variables, a questionnaire was applied before and one month after the training sessions. It is, therefore, relevant to analyse and reflect on how higher education can, and should, prepare future engineers to innovate as expected in this ever-changing world. This paper aims to further research and foster scholarly debate regarding the requirements and implications of teaching innovation. For that purpose, we examine an exploratory case study on interdisciplinary cooperation between two higher education courses, designed to promote students’ active learning of innovation through the progressive development of their soft and hard skills. Both courses engaged in an emancipatory pedagogical approach, mostly grounded in project-based work, active learning, and formative assessment. To obtain feedback on this interdisciplinary cooperation, questionnaires were devised to ascertain the students’ perceptions about this pedagogical approach. Individual responses were collected from both courses and data was analysed through simple statistical procedures. Articulating a priori soft skills development with a posteriori hard skills learning process is perceived by students as beneficial in gradually, yet successfully, understanding the subject of innovation. Also, there were even some external success indicators which showed the recognition of successful innovation skills development in informatics engineering students. Thus, according to students’ perceptions of their experience with an emancipatory pedagogy that connected soft with hard skills development, we conclude that such approach encouraged students to create new knowledge and allowed them to develop the necessary skills to innovate."],"publicationDate":"2020-01-15","publisher":"FEUP - Journals@Biblioteca da FEUP - https://journalsojs3.fe.up.pt/","embargoEndDate":null,"sources":["Journal of Innovation Management; Vol. 8 No. 1 (2020); 20-38","2183-0606","10.24840/2183-0606_008.001"],"formats":["application/pdf"],"contributors":null,"coverages":null,"bestAccessRight":{"code":"c_abf2","label":"OPEN","scheme":"http://vocabularies.coar-repositories.org/documentation/access_rights/"},"container":{"name":"Journal of Innovation Management","issnPrinted":"2183-0606","issnOnline":null,"issnLinking":null,"ep":null,"iss":null,"sp":null,"vol":null,"edition":null,"conferencePlace":null,"conferenceDate":null},"documentationUrls":null,"codeRepositoryUrl":null,"programmingLanguage":null,"contactPeople":null,"contactGroups":null,"tools":null,"size":null,"version":null,"geoLocations":null,"id":"688e356c54aa::955334a6d0a015ce766f2b029f7d7e23","originalIds":["50|688e356c54aa::955334a6d0a015ce766f2b029f7d7e23","oai:ojs.pkp.sfu.ca:article/513"],"pids":null,"dateOfCollection":null,"lastUpdateTimeStamp":null,"indicators":{"citationImpact":{"citationCount":0.0,"influence":2.2251732E-9,"popularity":1.1551581E-9,"impulse":0.0,"citationClass":"C5","influenceClass":"C5","impulseClass":"C5","popularityClass":"C5"}},"projects":null,"organizations":null,"communities":null,"collectedFrom":[{"key":"openaire____::f691b5dbac525203e3246bdc23666249","value":"Journals@Biblioteca da FEUP"}],"instances":[{"alternateIdentifiers":[{"scheme":"doi","value":"10.24840/2183-0606_008.001_0004"}],"accessRight":{"code":"c_abf2","label":"OPEN","scheme":"http://vocabularies.coar-repositories.org/documentation/access_rights/","openAccessRoute":"gold"},"type":"Article","urls":["https://journalsojs3.fe.up.pt/index.php/jim/article/view/2183-0606_008.001_0004"],"publicationDate":"2020-01-15","refereed":"nonPeerReviewed","hostedBy":{"key":"openaire____::440039d67622e855b05dfe8e382da4f9","value":"Journal of Innovation Management"},"collectedFrom":{"key":"openaire____::f691b5dbac525203e3246bdc23666249","value":"Journals@Biblioteca da FEUP"}}],"links":null,"otherTitles":null,"inDiamondJournal":true,"green":false,"isGreen":false,"isInDiamondJournal":true},{"authors":[{"id":null,"fullName":"Xavier da Silva, Trajano Felipe Barrabas","name":"Trajano Felipe Barrabas","surname":"Xavier Da Silva","rank":1,"pid":null},{"id":null,"fullName":"Costa, Humberto","name":"Humberto","surname":"Costa","rank":2,"pid":null},{"id":null,"fullName":"Ribeiro, Marcelo","name":"Marcelo","surname":"Ribeiro","rank":3,"pid":null},{"id":null,"fullName":"Guedes, Joana","name":"Joana","surname":"Guedes","rank":4,"pid":null}],"openAccessColor":null,"publiclyFunded":false,"eoscIfGuidelines":null,"type":"publication","language":{"code":"eng","label":"English"},"countries":null,"subjects":[{"subject":{"scheme":"keyword","value":"Medical waste"},"provenance":null},{"subject":{"scheme":"keyword","value":"Health worker"},"provenance":null},{"subject":{"scheme":"keyword","value":"Occupational health"},"provenance":null},{"subject":{"scheme":"keyword","value":"medical waste disposal"},"provenance":null},{"subject":{"scheme":"keyword","value":"Hospital waste management"},"provenance":null},{"subject":{"scheme":"keyword","value":"Occupational safety"},"provenance":null}],"mainTitle":"Biological hazards that can affect the health of the workers that handle hospital waste: : a systematic review protocol","subTitle":null,"descriptions":["Technological advances allow the science development, with the creation of new materials / equipment and the offer of different products and services.
