Good health"},"provenance":null}],"mainTitle":"Mathematical modelling approaches for spreading processes : zoonotic influenza and social contagion","subTitle":null,"descriptions":["Mathematical models are a fundamental component of many epidemiological studies. While models of infectious disease are well established, there are evident methodological gaps when attempting to provide realistic descriptions of particular biological systems. In this thesis we probe questions related to two global public health problems, zoonotic influenza and depression, requiring innovative modelling approaches to be developed, analysed and fitted to data. We give particular consideration to parameter inference schemes to gain insights into the dynamics of these illnesses, and model simulation for validation and prediction purposes, including assessing intervention impact.\\ud \\ud First, we investigate zoonotic influenza transmission at a local scale, our example being H5N1 in Bangladesh. It is vital to devise new models incorporating zoonotic transmission, and establish the factors enabling both continued transmission within poultry and spillover across the poultry-human divide. We outline a set of candidate transmission models, with a zoonotic transmission component, parameterised with a Bayesian inference scheme using data from two H5N1 outbreaks in the Dhaka region. Applied at two distinct spatial scales, we elucidate the model considerations that best capture the size and spatial distribution of reported cases. Simulations then illustrate the predicted impact of interventions designed to reduce H5N1 transmission.\\ud \\ud Second, the emergence of influenza strains with pandemic potential is considered from a global viewpoint. Using a Bayesian model selection approach we compare plausible model hypotheses regarding the mechanisms driving influenza pandemic occurrences. Analysing the time periods between putative influenza pandemics since 1700, it is shown the weight of evidence favours influenza pandemic emergence being history-dependent, rather than a memoryless process. Predictive distributions are then presented for the expected number of pandemic events from 2010 to 2110.\\ud \\ud Third, spread of behaviour-linked health problems are amenable to being represented with methodological approaches typically used to model infectious diseases. We explore this with regards to depression, using a longitudinal dataset comprising information on both the in-school friendships and mood status of US adolescents. A novel model is described that exploits the dynamical behaviour of mood over time to ascertain which mood states spread on social networks, via a contagion-like mechanism, and which do Adeleorina infectan usualmente hospederos intermediarios como las tortugas. Sin embargo, el conocimiento que se tiene acerca de las especies de parásitos que infectan estos hospederos es escasa. En la literatura, para la identificación de parásitos de este suborden se usan herramientas morfológicas, morfométricas y técnicas moleculares; principalmente información del gen 18S rDNA. Sin embargo, el uso de este gen tiene varias deficiencias. Para incrementar el conocimiento de los parásitos que infectan quelonios, así como en las técnicas moleculares para investigación en diversidad, este estudio tuvo como objetivos: 1) identificar la diversidad genética de linajes de parásitos aislados mediante amplificación distintos genes, 2) Integrar líneas de evidencia tanto morfológica como molecular para la identificación de unidades linajes evolutivos desconocidos y 3) diseñar herramientas alternativas para el diagnóstico e identificación de estos parásitos mediante la implementación de nuevos marcadores moleculares que han sido poco explorados en organismos de este suborden. Para alcanzar estos objetivos se obtuvieron y analizaron muestras sanguíneas de 457 individuos pertenecientes a 16 de las 29 especies de tortugas continentales presentes en Colombia. Todas las muestras fueron analizadas por métodos moleculares y 203 de estas muestras también fueron analizadas por microscopia. Como resultado de los analisis se pudo describir una nueva especie de Hepatozoon (Hepatozoon simidi sp. nov) en Rhinoclemmys melanosterna (Geoemyidide) basados en información acerca de la morfología de los estadios sanguíneos y secuencias de un fragmento del gen 18S. También se diseñaron nuevos sets de primers para los genes mitocondriales citocromo oxidasa I (coxI), citocromo oxidasa III (coxIII) y citocromo b (cytb) basados en la secuenciación genómica del parásito obtenido de una muestra tomada de Podocnemis vogli (Podocnmeididae). Se aislaron por lo menos 30 linajes diferentes de cada gen analizado, demostrando una alta diversidad genética de parásitos en estos hospederos. Sin embargo, los índices de diversidad evaluados demuestran que aún se desconoce la diversidad real de linajes parasitarios en estos hospederos. Adicionalmente, los resultados también evidenciaron varios procesos como heteroplasmía y/o especiación críptica, están afectando la identificación y caracterización de la diversidad de parásitos. (Texto tomado de la fuente) Some genera of parasites of the suborder Adeleorina usually infect intermediate hosts such as turtles. However, little is known about the diversity of parasites that infect these hosts. In the literature, for the identification of parasites of this suborder, morphological and morphometric tools as well as molecular techniques are used; mainly information from the 18S rDNA gene. However, the use of this gene has several shortfalls. To increase the knowledge on parasites infecting chelonians and the knowledge on different molecular markers that can offer more inflrmation for diversity reseach, this study had the following goals: 1) to identify the genetic diversity of isolated parasite lineages using the amplification of different genes, 2) to integrate morphological and molecular evidence for the identification of unknown evolutionary lineages, and 3) to design alternative tools for the diagnosis and identification of these parasites through the implementation of new molecular markers that have been little explored in organisms of this suborder and that are infecting turtles in Colombia. To reach those goals, a total of 457 blood smples of individuals belonging to 16 of the 29 species of continental turtles in Colombia were obtained and analyzed. All samples were analyzed by molecular methods and 203 of these samples were also analyzed by microscopy. As results of the performed analyses, a new species of Hepatozoon (Hepatozoon simidi sp. nov) was described infecting Rhinoclemmys melanosterna (Geoemydidae) based on the integration of morphological information of the blood stages and the sequences of a fragment of the 18S gene. New sets of primers for the mitochondrial genes cytochrome oxidase I (coxI), cytochrome oxidase III (coxIII) and cytochrome b (cytb) were designed based on the genomic sequencing of a sample from a parasite that had infected a Podocnemis vogli (Podocnemididae) individual. At least 30 different lineages were isolated from each gene analyzed, evidencing a high genetic diversity of parasites in these hosts. However, diversity indexes evaluated showed that the real diversity of parasitic lineages in these hosts is still unknown. Aditionally, the results also evidenced several phenomena such as heteroplasmy and /or criptic speciation, which are affecting the identification and characterization of the diversity of parasites. Lyme en Europa Central","subTitle":null,"descriptions":["La borreliosis de Lyme es una enfermedad infecciosa causada por las bacteria del grupo Borrelia burgdorferi. El único vector de esta enfermedad en Europa es la garrapata de la especie Ixodes ricinus y sus reservorios son pequeños mamíferos (principalmente roedores) y aves. Ixodes ricinus es muy sensible a los cambios de temperatura y humedad, pues necesita un hábitat con unas condiciones climáticas muy concretas para su supervivencia. Está considerada como la enfermedad transmitida por vectores con mayor prevalencia en Europa. Pese a ello, no es una enfermedad de declaración obligatoria para casi ningún país europeo. Debido a su interés para la salud pública, es necesario reforzar las medidas preventivas, la información al público, la vigilancia y elaborar una definición común de la enfermedad para todo el territorio europeo. Este estudio tiene como objetivo explicar la prevalencia de las unidades administrativas del estado de Baviera (donde la enfermedad es de declaración obligatoria) con variables climáticas que expliquen un nicho ecológico de la enfermedad. Hemos usado series de datos climáticos interpolados, que incluyen temperatura y precipitación (WorldClim) que se han integrado en un sistema de información geográfica (qGIS). El grupo completo de datos, incluyendo prevalencia y clima, se ha usado para construir un modelo de regresión logística múltiple que explique las zonas con diferentes tasas de prevalencia en Baviera. También se han usado datos de temperatura y estrés vegetal proporcionados por la serie de satélites MODIS, que han producido un peor ajuste. Aunque el modelo produce algunas clasificaciones erróneas, podemos concluir que la enfermedad tiene un nicho ambiental, en el que la temperatura tiene una importancia pequeña (probablemente debido a que todo el territorio estudiado es adecuado para la supervivencia del vector) mientras que la precipitación en diversos periodos juega un papel importante delineando las áreas con diversa prevalencia."],"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publisher":"Universidad de Zaragoza","embargoEndDate":null,"sources":["reponame:Zaguán. Most of the evidence on the short-term effects is based on studies conducted in major cities, because data or estimates of air pollutants exposures in non-urban settings have been historically lacking. This is a limitation, because a large fraction of the population lives outside the cities, where the vulnerability profile is different from that of urban populations. In the last decade, several attempts were made to estimate daily concentrations of particulate matter (PM) with high spatial resolution over large geographical domains. However, applications in Italy and Sweden, and on other pollutants as nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) and ozone (O₃), are almost lacking, leaving a gap in the knowledge of their health effects outside cities. This thesis has been designed to fill this gap, by providing daily estimates of multiple air pollutants at the national level, and exploring the spatial heterogeneity in their health effects. Italy represented a testing ground for the development of innovative mixed-effects regression models which combined PM measurements with satellite data, land-use parameters and meteorological fields, and produced daily estimates of PM₁₀ (PM with diameter smaller than 10 μm) for each squared kilometer of the country, and each day in 2006-2012 (Study I). More recently, machine learning methodologies have been tested in the U.S., therefore, we have updated estimates of PM₁₀ till 2015 and produced new estimates of PM₂.₅ (PM < 2.5 μm), using a random forest (RF) algorithm (Study II). Prognoser fra Statistisk sentralbyrå (2014) viser et potensielt underskudd av lærere på 38 000 innen 2025. Samtidig finnes det et ikke ubetydelig antall personer som gjør lærerjobben uten godkjent utdanning. Denne gruppen ukvalifiserte lærere representerer på en og samme tid en mulighet og en svakhet i utdanningspolitikken. På den ene siden er gruppen med på å trekke ned anseelsen til læreryrket som profesjon ved at de som ukvalifisert arbeidskraft går inn og gjør lærerjobben. På den andre siden kan denne gruppen være en kilde til forbedring av både profesjons- og rekrutteringsutfordringene dersom de anerkjennes potensielle lærere. På den andre siden kan denne gruppen være en kilde til forbedring av både profesjons- og rekrutteringsutfordringene. For at det skal skje, må man for det første erkjenne at skolen til en viss grad er avhengig av denne gruppen, og for det andre må man legge til rette på best mulig måte for at både kompetanse og kvalifikasjonsgrunnlag kommer på plass. Per i dag har man mangelfull antall ukvalifiserte lærere som utfører lærerjobben på midlertidig basis. I denne oppgaven har jeg derfor gjennomført en kartleggingsstudie av de ukvalifiserte lærerne i lys av lærermangel og rekrutteringsutfordringene i grunnskolen. Funnene tyder på et sterkt ønske og høy sannsynlighet for å ta kvalifiserende lærerutdanning. Resultatene fra denne undersøkelsen og gjennomgangen av teoretiske perspektiver og tilgjengelig dokumentasjon tyder på at lærere uten godkjent utdanning er en sammensatt gruppe som ikke bør behandles som homogen. På bakgrunn av tidligere rekrutteringskampanjer som har vært forsøkt, synliggjøres behovet for kartlegging som kan tjene som informasjonsmateriale for differensierte tiltak for å bedre kvalifikasjonsgrunnlaget og, i forlengelsen, antallet kvalifiserte lærere i sätt kopplade till ett överbelastat stressresponssystem där det inte längre finns tillläckligan strategier för att hantera stressen (Maslach &amp; Jackson, 1981; Selye, 1946). På senare tid har forskare intresserat sig för att många delar i föräldraskap kan ha samma kroniskt stressande effekter som i arbetslivet har därför intresserat sig för utbrändhet hos föräldrar (Mikolajczak, Gross &amp; Roskam, 2019; Aunola, Sorkkila &amp; Tolvanen, 2020; Griffith, 2020; Hubert &amp; Aujoulat, 2018 ; Kawamoto, Furutani &amp; Alimardani, 2018; Mikolajczak et al., 2018a; b). Flertalet studier visar att amerikanska mödrar rapporterar att de inte kan leva upp till den ”goda mammans” kulturella ideal och känner sig  misslyckade (Sutherland, 2010; Collins 2021, Folbre 2008). Den pågående COVID-19-pandemin har väckt en ökad oro för föräldrarnas stressbelastning och psykiska hälsa eftersom många föräldrar får ytterligare ansvar och färre resurser (Griffith, 2020). Denna studie fokuserar specifikt på amerikanska småbarnsmödrar som är i ett stabilt förhållande med frågeställningen om vilka upplevelser mödrar med hög risk för utbrändhet har. Urvalet om sex personer baserades på de i ett större urval som hade hög risk av utbrändhet i självskattningsskalan Shirom-Melamed Burnout Questionnaire (Lundgren-Nilssons et al., 2012) och använde en kvalitativ studiedesign. Analysen är en teoretisk essentialistisk tematisk analys med öppna intervjuer. Huvudfynden i studien visar att olika sociala/kulturella mekanismer tillsammans med perfektionism upplevdes påverka mödrarnas upplevelse av utbrändhet. Symptomen kopplade till mödrarnas utbrändhet inkluderade bitterhet mot andra och sig själv och att gå in i ett \"överlevnadsläge\" där mödrarna gjorde val som inte passade med deras värderingar. Ett annat centralt fynd var hur mödrarna beskrev skam som en bidragande orsak av deras utbrändhetsupplevelse. Skyddsfaktorer diskuteras också. Resultaten av denna studie kan användas för att informera om den allmänna politiska reformen som syftar till att stödja mödrar och barn i USA där antalet utbrändhet hos föräldrar har ökat på grund av COVID 19-pandemin (Griffith, 2020).","Burnout occurs as the consequence of an overburdened stress response system which has become exhausted as the result of attempting to eliminate chronic stressors (Maslach &amp; Jackson, 1981; Selye, 1946). In so much as parenting can be chronically stressful, researchers have begun to apply the construct of burnout to the context of parenting (Mikolajczak, Gross &amp; Roskam, 2019; Aunola, Sorkkila &amp; Tolvanen, 2020; Griffith, 2020; Hubert &amp; Aujoulat, 2018; Kawamoto, Furutani &amp; Alimardani, 2018; Mikolajczak et al., 2018a; b). American mothers consistently report feeling unable to live up to cultural ideals of the “good mother” and feeling as though they are failing (Sutherland, 2010; Collins 2021, Folbre 2008). The current COVID-19 pandemic has sparked a heightened concern for the stress load and mental health of parents with many of them having additional responsibilities and fewer resources (Griffith, 2020). Focusing specifically on U.S. mothers with multiple young children in a stable relationship, this study asks: what are the lived experiences of mothers who are burned out? Using the Shirom-Melamed Burnout Questionnaire as a measure of exhaustion (Lundgren-Nilssons et al., 2012) and utilizing a qualitative design, this study uses theoretical essentialist thematic analysis to investigate the themes which emerged from six open ended interviews. Key findings suggest that various social/ cultural ideologies along with various dimensions of perfectionism contributed to the mothers’ experience of burnout. Consequences of the mothers’ burnout included resentment toward others and herself and going into “survival mode,” wherein mothers’ made choices which did not align with her values. Another central finding was how the mother’s described feeling ashamed as a contributor and a consequence of their burnout experience. Protective factors are also discussed. Alongside this huge rise, the number of users has also amplified considerably in the past two decades. Most responsible institutions such as banks and governments follow specific rules and regulations regarding conducts and security. But, most websites are designed and developed using little restrictions on these issues. That is why it is important to protect users from harmful webpages. Previous research has looked at to detect harmful webpages, by running the machine learning models on a remote website. The problem with this approach is that the detection rate is slow, because of the need to handle large number of webpages. There is a gap in knowledge to research into which machine learning algorithms are capable of detecting harmful web applications in real time on a local machine.\\ud \\ud The conventional method of detecting malicious webpages is going through the black list and checking whether the webpages are listed. Black list is a list of webpages which are classified as malicious from a user's point of view. These black lists are created by trusted organisations and volunteers. They are then used by modern web browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc. However, black list is ineffective because of the frequent-changing nature of webpages, growing numbers of webpages that pose scalability issues and the crawlers' inability to visit intranet webpages that require computer operators to login as authenticated users.\\ud \\ud The thesis proposes to use various machine learning algorithms, both supervised and unsupervised to categorise webpages based on parsing their features such as content (which played the most important role in this thesis), URL information, URL links and screenshots of webpages. The features were then converted to a format understandable by machine learning algorithms which analysed these features to make one important decision: whether a given webpage is malicious or not, using commonly available software and hardware. Prototype tools were developed to compare and analyse the efficiency of these machine learning techniques. These techniques include supervised algorithms such as Support Vector Machine, Naïve Bayes, Random Forest, Linear Discriminant Analysis, Quantitative Discriminant Analysis and Decision Tree. The unsupervised techniques are Self-Organising Map, Affinity Propagation and K-Means. Self-Organising Map was used instead of Neural Networks and the research suggests that the new version of Neural Network i.e. Deep Learning would be great for this research.\\ud \\ud The supervised algorithms performed better than the unsupervised algorithms and the best out of all these techniques is SVM that achieves 98% accuracy. The result was validated by the Chrome extension which used the classifier in real time. Unsupervised algorithms came close to supervised algorithms.
