Indeed, the term 'state' was rarely used. Current work, however, increasingly views the state as an agent which, although influenced by the society that surrounds it, also shapes social and political processes. The contributors to this volume, which includes some of the best recent interdisciplinary scholarship on states in relation to social structures, make use of theoretically engaged comparative and historical investigations to provide improved conceptualizations of states and how they operate. Each of the book's major parts presents a related set of analytical issues about modern states, which are explored in the context of a wide range of times and places, both contemporary and historical, and in developing and advanced-industrial nations. The first part examines state strategies in newly developing countries. The second part analyzes war making and state making in early modern Europe, and discusses states in relation to the post-World War II international economy. The third part pursues new insights into how states influence political cleavages and collective action. In the final chapter, the editors bring together the questions raised by the contributors and suggest tentative conclusions that emerge from an overview of all the articles. As a programmatic work that proposes new directions for the analysis of modern states, the volume will appeal to a wide range of teachers and students of political science, political economy, sociology, history, and anthropology.
"],"publicationDate":"1985-09-13","publisher":"Cambridge University Press (CUP)","embargoEndDate":null,"sources":["Crossref"],"formats":null,"contributors":null,"coverages":null,"bestAccessRight":{"code":"c_14cb","label":"CLOSED","scheme":"http://vocabularies.coar-repositories.org/documentation/access_rights/"},"container":null,"documentationUrls":null,"codeRepositoryUrl":null,"programmingLanguage":null,"contactPeople":null,"contactGroups":null,"tools":null,"size":null,"version":null,"geoLocations":null,"id":"doi_________::00f043cc341e95e127c897e173c64ff7","originalIds":["10.1017/cbo9780511628283","50|doiboost____|00f043cc341e95e127c897e173c64ff7"],"pids":[{"scheme":"doi","value":"10.1017/cbo9780511628283"}],"dateOfCollection":null,"lastUpdateTimeStamp":null,"indicators":{"citationImpact":{"citationCount":2041.0,"influence":1.8832442E-7,"popularity":2.2910424E-7,"impulse":34.0,"citationClass":"C1","influenceClass":"C1","impulseClass":"C3","popularityClass":"C2"}},"projects":null,"organizations":[{"legalName":"Brown University","acronym":"Brown University","id":"openorgs____::38d7097854736583dde879d12dacafca","pids":[{"scheme":"ISNI","value":"0000000419369094"},{"scheme":"ROR","value":"https://ror.org/05gq02987"},{"scheme":"OrgRef","value":"4157"},{"scheme":"mag_id","value":"27804330"},{"scheme":"wikidata","value":"Q49114"},{"scheme":"FundRef","value":"100011184"},{"scheme":"fundref","value":"100012305"},{"scheme":"fundref","value":"100005478"},{"scheme":"PIC","value":"999572682"},{"scheme":"OrgRef","value":"747524"},{"scheme":"FundRef","value":"100006418"},{"scheme":"Wikidata","value":"Q49114"},{"scheme":"fundref","value":"100011184"},{"scheme":"GRID","value":"grid.40263.33"},{"scheme":"FundRef","value":"100005478"},{"scheme":"fundref","value":"100006418"},{"scheme":"FundRef","value":"100012305"}]}],"communities":null,"collectedFrom":[{"key":"openaire____::081b82f96300b6a6e3d282bad31cb6e2","value":"Crossref"}],"instances":[{"pids":[{"scheme":"doi","value":"10.1017/cbo9780511628283"}],"license":"Cambridge Core User Agreement","accessRight":{"code":"c_14cb","label":"CLOSED","scheme":"http://vocabularies.coar-repositories.org/documentation/access_rights/","openAccessRoute":null},"type":"Book","urls":["https://doi.org/10.1017/cbo9780511628283"],"publicationDate":"1985-09-13","refereed":"peerReviewed","hostedBy":{"key":"openaire____::55045bd2a65019fd8e6741a755395c8c","value":"Unknown Repository"},"collectedFrom":{"key":"openaire____::081b82f96300b6a6e3d282bad31cb6e2","value":"Crossref"}}],"links":[],"otherTitles":null,"inDiamondJournal":false,"green":false,"isGreen":false,"isInDiamondJournal":false},{"authors":[{"id":null,"fullName":"Michael J. Kennedy School of Government, which aims to explore what people want from government, the public sector, and non‐profit organizations. A first volume from the ‘Visions’ project (Why People Don’t Trust Government) was published by Harvard University Press in 1997; this second volume analyses a series of interrelated questions. The first two are diagnostic: how far are there legitimate grounds for concern about public support for democracy worldwide; and are trends towards growing cynicism found in the US evident in many established and newer democracies? The second concern is analytical: what are the main political, economic, and cultural factors driving the dynamics of support for democratic government? The final questions are prescriptive: what are the consequences of this analysis and what are the implications for strengthening democratic governance? The book brings together a distinguished group of international scholars who develop a global analysis of these issues by looking at trends in established and newer democracies towards the end of the twentieth century. Chapters draw upon the third wave (1995–1997) World Values Survey as well as using an extensive range of comparative empirical evidence.
Challenging the conventional wisdom, the book concludes that accounts of a democratic ‘crisis’ are greatly exaggerated. By the mid‐1990s most citizens worldwide shared widespread aspirations to the ideals and principles of democratic government, although at the same time there remains a marked gap between evaluations of the ideal and the practice of democracy. The publics in many newer democracies in Central and Eastern Europe and in Latin America have proved deeply critical of the performance of their governing regimes, and during the 1980s many established democracies saw a decline in public confidence in the core institutions of representative democracy, including parliaments, the legal system, and political parties.
