In order for populations to survive, fast adaptive responses are needed. Evolutionary adaptation however is a relative slow mechanism and it has been suggested that phenotypic plasticity may provide the important, rapid mechanism that is required to respond to these changes. It is therefore imperative that we understand the role and impact of phenotypic plasticity on population dynamics and persistence to aid protection and conservation. Recent studies, including our own, suggest that epigenetic mechanisms contribute to phenotypic plasticity in response to climate change. These findings emphasize the need to include epigenetic processes and phenotypic plasticity in long-term population predictions under future climate change. Unfortunately, population models commonly do not include plasticity and epigenetic processes, potentially leading to erroneous predictions of responses to climate change.\n\nIn order to study the putative role of epigenetic variation as an important source for plastic responses to climate change, long-term data on population dynamics and (epi)genetic variation of natural populations are needed. Therefore we elaborate on our earlier research on the model species Arabidopsis lyrata ssp. petraea that was extensively studied between 2005-2009 and for which detailed (epi)genetic data is available. For this species, phenotypic plasticity was already found to contribute to adaptation to changes in temperature and epigenetic mechanisms were recently suggested to regulate such plastic responses.\n\nHere, we propose a much-needed ecological-genomics modelling approach, comprising field and lab studies. We will first quantify the epigenetic, genetic and phenotypic variation in natural populations of our model species and relate this to spatio-temporal variation in environmental conditions. Next we will determine if plasticity at the phenotypic level is correlated to plasticity at the epigenetic level using information from the field study and experiments under highly controlled conditions in the lab. In the latter, clonal offshoots from the same populations will be exposed to different temperature regimes, which will allow us to analyse differences in plasticity in relation to changes in epigenetic variation and gene expression, independently of genetic variation. Finally we will integrate the obtained data on phenotypic plastic responses and its relation to (epi)genetic variation in integral projection models. This study will reveal the relevance of plastic responses and the role of epigenetics herein for rapid evolutionary change and hence, will result in more accurate predictions of long-term plant populations’ resilience and persistence to fast and sudden climatic change.","granted":{"currency":null,"totalCost":0.0,"fundedAmount":0.0},"h2020Programmes":null,"funding":{"funder":{"id":"nwo_________::NWO","shortname":"NWO","name":"Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO)","jurisdiction":{"code":"NL","label":"Netherlands"},"pid":null},"level0":{"id":null,"description":null,"name":null},"level1":null,"level2":null},"links":[{"header":{"relationType":"projectOrganization","relationClass":"hasParticipant","relatedIdentifier":"pending_org_::6413ab1a47851a5b637e33748d96dde0","relatedRecordType":"organization","relationProvenance":"sysimport:crosswalk:entityregistry","trust":"0.900"},"title":null,"websiteurl":null,"pid":null,"collectedfrom":[{"dsId":"openaire____::0362fcdb3076765d9c0041ad331553e8","dsName":"OpenOrgs Database"}],"author":null,"description":null,"dateofacceptance":null,"publisher":null,"codeRepositoryUrl":null,"resulttype":null,"instances":null,"officialname":null,"datasourcetype":null,"datasourcetypeui":null,"openairecompatibility":null,"legalname":"Wageningen University & Research, Afdeling Omgevingswetenschappen, Plantenecologie en Natuurbeheer (PEN)","legalshortname":"Wageningen University & Research, Afdeling Omgevingswetenschappen, Plantenecologie en Natuurbeheer (PEN)","country":{"code":"UNKNOWN","label":"Unknown"},"projectTitle":null,"code":null,"acronym":null,"contracttype":null,"funding":null,"validationDate":null,"startDate":null,"endDate":null,"givenName":null,"familyName":null,"personRoleInProject":null,"declaredAffiliation":null,"affiliationsTimeline":null},{"header":{"relationType":"projectOrganization","relationClass":"hasParticipant","relatedIdentifier":"pending_org_::9e317e6bfe2cca29e9b1310afd6020e9","relatedRecordType":"organization","relationProvenance":"sysimport:crosswalk:entityregistry","trust":"0.900"},"title":null,"websiteurl":null,"pid":null,"collectedfrom":[{"dsId":"openaire____::0362fcdb3076765d9c0041ad331553e8","dsName":"OpenOrgs Database"}],"author":null,"description":null,"dateofacceptance":null,"publisher":null,"codeRepositoryUrl":null,"resulttype":null,"instances":null,"officialname":null,"datasourcetype":null,"datasourcetypeui":null,"openairecompatibility":null,"legalname":"Wageningen University & Research","legalshortname":"Wageningen University & Research","country":{"code":"UNKNOWN","label":"Unknown"},"projectTitle":null,"code":null,"acronym":null,"contracttype":null,"funding":null,"validationDate":null,"startDate":null,"endDate":null,"givenName":null,"familyName":null,"personRoleInProject":null,"declaredAffiliation":null,"affiliationsTimeline":null}]},{"id":"av0_________::90f47a842cc70401fc5ea1f9f287bdbd","code":"IAA600450901","acronym":null,"title":"Molecular adaptation to climate change","websiteUrl":null,"startDate":"2009-01-01","endDate":"2013-12-31","callIdentifier":null,"keywords":"climate change ;adaptation ;glacial refugia ;DNA sequences ;haemoglobin ;bank vole","openAccessMandateForPublications":false,"openAccessMandateForDataset":false,"subjects":null,"fundings":[{"shortName":"AV0","name":"Czech Academy of Sciences","jurisdiction":"CZ","fundingStream":{"id":"AV0::IA","description":"IA"}}],"summary":"Identification of genetic basis of climate adaptation is particularly important to understanding why some species survived in northern refugia surrounded by unsuitable climate, while others shifted their distributions to southern latitudes. Regions colonised by the two lineages can be identified from mtDNA phylogeography and they are fixed fordifferent electrophoretically detectable haemoglobin variants. As the next step, we propose a molecular analysis of genes coding for constituent polypeptide chains of the adult haemoglobin in the bank vole, which are known to show adaptive variation toclimate and altitude in other mammals.
