From the study of olive heritage, chosen for its representative quality within Mediterranean identity, a bearer of strong values and symbols yet insufficiently valued in the Euro-Mediterranean, we wish to build an innovative, interdisciplinary and transposable methodology. Starting from a critical approach to heritage, we wish to make visible an often-neglected aspect of rural heritage as well as the stakeholders and communities linked to it, not all of them aware of its social value. OLIVE4ALL highlights the processes of patrimonialisation and of constitution of communities around the olive tree, questioning the concept of heritage. The project proposes an experiment centred on a transmedia device that studies how carefully developed forms of mediation based on narration, sensoriality and digital technology can succeed in raising awareness among stakeholders and audiences far removed from heritage. OLIVE4ALL is interested in devices enabling inclusive access to heritage. Once appropriated, action remains: we will develop specific tools to help local stakeholders dialogue, network, and integrate heritage into the development of their territory. OLIVE4ALL wishes to enhance the value of heritage in society through action aimed at strengthening public policies. The objective of OLIVE4ALL is to demonstrate that by giving more space to heritage in societies, we can respond to the global challenges made all the more urgent by the current health crisis. Enhancing the value of food heritage in European societies serves to raise awareness of sustainable development, in its human, social, economic and environmental dimensions. The project TomorrowS will largely focus on the impact of climate change on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L) and durum wheat (Triticum durum), two main crops in the Mediterranean region. These crops have a negative environmental impact due to increased use of inputs involved in building resilience to biotic and abiotic stresses. The aim of TomorrowS is the optimization of crop management for these two major Mediterranean crops, in order to adapt them to projected climate change negative impacts. Therefore, TomorrowS will reduce uncertainties on crop yield and will provide supporting information to help farmers managing their crop. In addition, due to uncertainties on irrigation water availability and pesticides costs, TomorrowS will target in cropping systems that are resilient to sub-optimal use of such inputs. Besides the above stated main objectives, this project also aims to provide a generic methodological framework to design sustainable agriculture systems for other crops and countries, and last but not least, promote synergies among young researchers. TomorrowS is a trans-disciplinary project as it requires insights from agronomy, physiology, crop modeling and data management to generate the optimized cropping systems. Three young researchers from Greece, Tunisia and France will exchange knowledge, cooperate and strengthen their scientific capacities thanks to TomorrowS. Cotton, is a major agricultural crop in Greece, accounting for more than 8% of total agricultural output, engaging more than 75,000 farmers while durum wheat is the most cultivated crop in Mediterranean basin, representing the main population diet component for pasta. In Greece, durum wheat covered 16.2% of the total cultivated area and 60% of total production is exported mainly in Italy while in Tunisia, is the primary food source as the consumption reaches 258 kg per year per capita. The dataset will be generated by two years of Genotype x Environment x Crop Management (GEM) experiments conducted in Greece and in Tunisia for 3 to 4 commercial varieties of cotton and durum wheat. The factors studied in the GEM experiments will be the cultivar, amount of fertilization, amount of irrigation and salt content of irrigation water. These GEM experiments will provide sufficient data to calibrate, evaluate and enhance a deterministic crop model embedded in the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) software application, which will be accomplished by the French partner. Once, GEM interactions are properly described and calibrated in the model, the model will be used to simulate virtual ideotype of crop management and describe the tradeoff between production, resilience and use of resources along with the uncertainty on production. In addition, economic viability of crop management ideotypes will be evaluated. The results from TomorrowS will be diffused to the scientific community through publications in national and international journals and also with the participation of the consortium members to international conferences and national meetings. Summarizing, this ARIMNET2 project implementation will contribute to the adaptation of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L) and durum wheat (Triticum durum) crop managements facing constraint such as irrigation water salinity, under the present and the projected future Mediterranean climates. In that context, the results should contribute to (i) increase yield while reducing yield inter-annual variability, (ii) increase economic viability of farms by increasing water and fertilizer use Therefore, the general idea of our project is to determine the impacts of early exposome (in utero, kids up to 5 years old) on the onset of events (low birth weight, preterm birth, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, …) that constitute susceptibility factors to develop lung disease at adult age (such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease - COPD), or to impact the course of genetic disease such as cystic fibrosis (CF). In the term \"exposome\", will be evaluated mainly air pollution, but also the noise, climate, life style (sports, …), socio-economic status, light exposure, air conditioning at home/work, … The project will use already constituted cohorts (pregnant mother and kids, from the general population, and from CF-constituted cohorts). On these cohorts, beside a thorough characterization of the exposome as well as clinical parameters, we will look for new biomarkers of exposome (focus on lipidomic and epigenetic analysis) to be linked with the onset of susceptibility factor, and develop a sensor based on these biomarkers. The relevance of the clinical findings will be addressed thanks to preclinical models exposed to simulated atmospheres ± noise, climate change, exercise, … The use of simulation chambers in a biological context constitutes a major innovative aspect of our project, as no such experimental set-up has been built before, and has therefore never been proposed in EU project focused on exposome. Risk assessment will be performed (multicriteria risk assessment and machine learning implementation), as well as economic evaluation (cost effectiveness and econometric modeling). Overall, the project should lead to new guidelines and recommendations regarding exposome/health effects. These could be beneficial to clinicians (to identify individuals at risk), researchers (to develop future treatments), and to public (to assess their personal risk, hopefully leading to changes of lifestyle). The production of several patents can be envisioned in the frame work of the project following the identification of new biomarkers and the development of sensors. To achieve our aim, the proposed network has a clear multidisciplinary dimension, as it brings together expertise of epidemiologists (Danish Cancer Society Research Center), adult and pediatrician lung specialists (CHI Créteil), physico-chemist of the atmosphere (LISA, FORTH), biologists (IMRB, Lipotype, Cambridge Epigenetix), engineer for sensor development (Fraunhofer), economics (Data Mining International), ethics and legal issues specialists (LN). The emergence of a new viral disease results from a complex interaction among several factors, including ecological changes of host and vector populations, and genetic changes due to the introduction of new crop varieties and the evolution of the viruses and/or vectors. A transnational consortium incorporating 12 research groups from 5 EU and 4 non-EU Mediterranean countries has been gathered to analyse different aspects of the ecology and biology of specific plant viruses, providing measures for the management and control of specific emergent viral diseases in Mediterranean horticulture and, importantly, a better understanding of the phenomenon of emergence itself. Our project will focus on the emerging field of the noncoding transcripts. The recent discovery of the pervasive transcription of the noncoding regions of the eukaryotic genome has had a major impact on our understanding of gene expression regulation. In fact, noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) originating from these regions are emerging as fundamental regulators of gene expression in both normal and pathological aspects of physiology, and act at multiple layers with effects on chromatin modifications, transcription, and RNA processing, turnover or translational rate. The ncRNAs use a wide variety of mechanisms to regulate gene expression programs in cells. The NOCODING-TRAIN consortium aims at applying to the MSCA-ITN grant by gathering teams working on different areas of ncRNA research field to train novel generations of scientists in this emerging field. Our training will focus on the control of the small and long ncRNA expression and their mode of action to regulate gene expression in eukaryotic cells during developmental, physiological, and pathological events. The NOCODING-TRAIN project is organized into 5 main axes, built on existing research forces and collaborative work from partners to address the following specific questions: 1. The molecular mechanisms regulating the expression of ncRNAs, with focus on biogenesis and turnover. 2. The cellular and subcellular heterogeneity of ncRNAs mode of action to regulate gene expression through epigenetic, transcriptional and post-transcriptional mechanisms. 3. ncRNAs in the pathogenesis of wide-spread human diseases, including the inheritance, onset and progression of cancer and cardiometabolic disorders. 4. Attracting outstanding students represents a major challenge and a condition for high standard research. I propose an international Ph.D. training program, in which the experimental work in the laboratories will be coupled with training classes held by local as well as external experts in biology, bioinformatics, and biostatistics, but also in other disciplines including informatics, statistics, artificial intelligence scientific integrity, and scientific English classes. Workshops will be also organized twice a year to provide a stage to discuss individual Ph.D. student research projects and foster exchange between the laboratories. Providing interdisciplinary training is crucial to widen the technological and conceptual toolkit of young researchers, and a condition for innovative research in gene expression. According to the expertise of each partner of the consortium, we will provide specific experimental training. If successful, the MRSEI grant will be used to attend three scientific meetings to meet scientists in the different fields of ncRNA research, who can reinforce the multidisciplinary aspect of the consortium. I will organize 1 two-days symposium and 2 one-day round-table meetings with all proposed partners in Nice. I will use the MRSEI grant to make a website of the proposed training program, which will be accessible to the MSCA-ITN Reviewers, and publicly available only if our application will be focuses on the study of Mediterranean third countries as a field of experimentation on the issue of migration and as a bridging link between Southern Europe and the Sahel. Mediterranean migration has become a major concern for academic researchers, European policy makers and public opinion. Since 2011, major political upheavals on the Southern shore of the Mediterranean have brought about a crisis situation with new long-term socio-economic and legal consequences at a Euro-Mediterranean level. These changes require the renewal of the paradigms and frameworks of thought. The Mediterranean is a particularly relevant laboratory for the development of new migratory configurations. It is at the crossroads of the South-North migration route and also those of South-South, East-West. It is composed of neighbouring countries that are especially affected by migration because of their geographical location at the \"forefront\" of arrivals of migrants and refugees from Africa and the Middle East. MIGRASYL’s ambition is to promote the third countries’ migration policy domain that it is in urgent need of investigation. This area is a crucial empirical field for analyzing the complex interrelation concerning push factors and policies managing migration, asylum and refugees in the EuroMed. In the long term, MIGRASYL aims to build a unique multi-partner digital platform, gathering national migration observatories. With this international project, and over a 18 months period (November 2017 – April 2019), MIGRASYL will constitute a network of Euro-Mediterranean and sub-Saharan partners (France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Austria, Turkey, Mauritania, Senegal, Tunisia, Morocco, Lebanon, Malta) thanks to workshops dedicated to the challenges of international migrations and to the evolution of asylum law in this geographical area. These workshops and the MIGRASYL consortium meeting will aim at organizing and structuring an international H2020 project which will be submitted to the European Commission in 2018 or 2019, in the framework of the Societal Challenge “Europe in a changing world – Inclusive, innovative and reflective societies”, « 1. Call on Migration and the refugee crisis ». The MIGRASYL researchers will conduct fieldwork on 3 geographical areas: Southern Europe, the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa, which are all impacted by important migratory flows and by the hosting of asylum seekers. MIGRASYL ambitions to gather partner institutions in the field of socio-anthropology, political sciences, law, history, demography and geography. This core partnership will be complemented by a network of associations, NGOs and Euro-Mediterranean civil society players. MIGRASYL’s outcomes will include empirical knowledge on social assistance schemes of host and transit countries, based on interviews and statistical data. Policy-makers will benefit from an analysis of the coherence and effectiveness of European policies on migration, compared with the development of migration policies in third countries. MIGRASYL will highlight good practices of institutions active in the defense of migrants and migration governance, at local, regional, national and international level, in order to combat irregular migration. Whiteflies (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) are important plant pests and virus vectors in many agricultural systems worldwide. Among them, the sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) is considered the most devastating pest of vegetables, ornamentals, and agronomic crops throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world, because it can transmit over 200 species of plant viruses. Previous distributions of the species were limited to regions between the 30th latitudes but in the past two decades, it has invaded every continent in the world except Antarctica. Based on climate models, B. tabaci populations are expected to expand to regions where increasing temperatures will eliminate frosts, allowing year round breeding. Due to the extreme polyphagy of the species, the effects of such changes will probably be profound and may lead to substantial ecosystem-wide changes. Many arthropods host one or more inherited bacterial symbionts, the phenotypes of which have important implications for ecologically based pest management strategies. The overall goal of this proposal is to develop novel strategies for reducing the direct and indirect damage inflicted by B. tabaci. It aims to predict the evolution of B. tabaci populations around the Mediterranean, from which diagnostic and preventive measures can be derived. To achieve these goals the following objectives have been set: 1) Determine the geographic distribution of B. tabaci biotypes, their population genetic structure and symbiotic complement around the Mediterranean basin in light of climatic changes; 2) Determine B. tabaci invasion routes within the Mediterranean basin; 3) Determine the respective influence of nuclear and symbiotic variations on stress resistance in B. tabaci; 4) Model the influence of climate change on B. tabaci biotype/population outbreaks; 5) Establish a network of researchers. The research conducted will involve the use of diverse methods including field studies, molecular biology, bioinformatics, analyses of international data bases and advanced computer programs. In order to begin preparing now for the upcoming challenges of our changing environment, we will combine established research expertise in climate change assessment and environmental system modelling with insects and symbionts ecology, behaviour and population genetics for allowing the necessary incorporation of pest risk assessment and simulation models into comprehensive management planning systems of both natural and agricultural
