However, traditional 3D printing methods remain limited in their ability to create dynamic structural components such as soft grippers, self-assembly systems, or smart actuators. This limitation initiated research and development of 4D printing, a technique which uses smart materials that are processed during 3D printing. Such materials possess properties that can be altered in a controlled and reversible manner in response to external stimuli such as temperature changes, magnetic fields, light, or exposure to chemicals. Despite the staggering potential of 4D printing adequate tools are lacking to dynamically study, inspect, and optimise smart materials. Recognizing the need for solution, X-CELERATE will focus on nurturing the next generation of innovators in the field of time-resolved, lab X-ray imaging, a rapidly evolving technology ideally suited to study the dynamics of smart materials. Challenges include the development of 1) targeted strategies for 4D X-ray computed tomography (4DCT) imaging, 2) 4DCT quality control methods, and 3) lab-based phase contrast imaging for low density smart materials characterisation. To address these challenges successfully, a multidisciplinary approach is required, incorporating expertise from diverse fields such as applied mathematics, physics, materials science, and product design. The primary goal of X-CELERATE is to develop novel 4DCT tools to boost the development and characterisation of advanced materials. By providing a comprehensive training environment, X-CELERATE aims to cultivate a new generation of research engineers with an entrepreneurial mindset who will play a crucial role in propelling Europe's manufacturing industry. X-CELERATE will realise a huge step towards harnessing the full potential of smart material applications, thereby paving the way for transformative advancements in Europe’s manufacturing A multi-method strategy combining environmental and energy history, discourse analysis, ethnography, and sound studies will illuminate how successive energy transitions have transformed both instrument-making and sonic practices across rural areas of Southern Italy. Findings will be disseminated through scientific papers, a travelling art exhibition and a long-standing interactive website, maximising public and scholarly engagement while creating a lasting cultural resource. The Institute of Ethnomusicology at NOVA University of Lisbon offers world-leading expertise to support the project’s innovative scope and impact. Many sites of the Romani genocide - mass killing sites, labour camps, and prisons - remain unmarked and urgently require preservation measures.\nEMPOWER undertakes an ambitious effort to rediscover the forgotten memoryscapes of Roma in EECE. Unlike previous studies of neglected sites, which primarily focused on trauma, EMPOWER poses a critical question: Can such sites of painful memory become spaces of empowerment and solidarity? To answer this question, the project sheds light on how Roma families and communities have commemorated genocide sites and honoured their lost family members, from the postwar period to the present.\nTo reconstruct Romani memoryscapes, EMPOWER integrates oral history and ethnographic qualitative methods with archival research and digital humanities tools, such as GIS technology, mapping, and visualization. The in-depth case studies across EECE highlight the lives and legacies of Romani survivors and activists who have transformed neglected sites into spaces of memory.\nEMPOWER takes a community-centred approach to understanding the legacy of these neglected sites. The project actively engages Roma communities in both data collection and dissemination. Alongside scholarly publications, its deliverables include a short documentary film and a traveling exhibition. The online platform, Hidden Sites, Living Voices, will feature interactive maps, activist biographies, and historical documents in English and vernacular languages, including Romani. These MFs exceed Earth’s natural geomagnetic field and induce behavioural and physiological changes in marine species, suggesting a stress response. One of the knowledge gaps in this field is the neuroendocrine signaling system that controls behavioural and physiological stress responses in fish. Moreover, magnetosensitive fishes that rely on geomagnetic cues for migration are likely to be more vulnerable to anthropogenic MFs. The MAGNIFISH project focuses on the European eel that is a pertinent model species due to its critically endangered status, magnetosensitivity, and exposure to power grids during its inland and seaward migrations. Thus, eels provide a broadly applicable framework for assessing and mitigating MF impacts on other commercially important migratory fishes. I will establish dose-response reaction norms in two early life stages (glass eels and elvers) across an environmentally relevant gradient of MF intensities (50-380 µT). This will pinpoint response thresholds across biological scales—from neuroendocrine regulation to physiological and behavioural changes—and identify most vulnerable life stages to anthropogenic MFs. Subsequently, I will test if MF exposure alters the innate magnetic orientation behaviour in migratory fish, directly assessing impacts on migratory success. The resulting predictive risk assessment framework will determine MF intensities that compromise fish migratory success and fitness, and estimate the distance from cables at which migrating species would be affected. While the literature extensively addresses military aspects of conflicts, how governments strategically engage with NSAAs’ constituents during a conflict to sever the ties between the two (hereafter referred to as to counster / counstering, a term coined within this project) has been widely neglected despite its prevalence. COUNSTER addresses this gap by arguing that we should turn our focus towards modeling the causes and outcomes of counstering efforts and investigate the mechanisms that render those strategies successful, or not, given that military power is neither the only, nor the most effective tool in governments’ arsenal. By employing a constituency-centered perspective, this novel approach also allows ascertaining the effectiveness of both attractive and repressive strategies targeting NSAAs’ constituents in fight against radicalization, insurgency, and terrorism.\n\nCOUNSTER aims to offer a theoretical breakthrough to conflict studies by adopting a unique and comprehensive approach that centers on the interactions within the government-NSAA-constituency triad. This will be achieved by embracing a holistic view accounting for triadic actor interactions via mixed-method comparative analyses at both macro and micro levels, complemented by original observational and experimental data. Research and innovation activities will focus on the following:\n(i) Development of sophisticated tools for estimating parameter variations and identifying system characteristics using hybrid model-based and data-driven methods;\nii) Design of advanced vehicle motion control systems considering automated driving functions, multi- actuated configurations and different electric powertrain topologies using robust and predictive approaches;\niii) Validation and verification of real-time software and hardware-based demonstrators using state-of-the-art methods;\niv) Facilitate practical recommendations, based on the MOCO results, for researchers, OEMs and suppliers working on automotive and interdisciplinary applications;\nv) Professional development of participating research and engineering staff;\nvi) Knowledge transfer and promotion of the exchange of expertise between the partners.\nIn addition to research and training, the project will focus on relevant networking, dissemination and exploitation initiatives to maximise its impact. - European Research Council - HORIZON ERC Grants"}}],"summary":"Ion conduction in solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) is the bedrock of several electrochemical devices like batteries and fuel cells which are vital to our modern society. High conductivity is crucial for such applications, and increasing the intrinsically low conductivity of SSEs has been of enormous technological interest. The discovery that the conductivity of SSEs can increase or decrease by orders of magnitude at their interface with a non-conductor (e.g., oxides) has led to much interest in the use of interface engineering to rationally design SSEs with improved conductivity and overall performance in electrochemical devices. This has so far not been successful because the underlying mechanisms that lead to the profound changes in conductivity at interfaces are not yet well understood due to the complex composition of such interfaces, and the fact that several properties of the two components concomitantly influence this effect. \n\nBuilding on my preliminary results, I aim to unravel the fundamental mechanisms of interface ion conductivity by preparing model nanocomposite SSEs (SSE + oxides) that will allow me to disentangle the different parameters that contribute to this effect. The interface physics/chemistry responsible for interface ion transport will be precisely tuned via surface and compositional modification of the oxides. I will combine advanced surface-sensitive probe techniques, including XPS, X-ray Raman Scattering, HR-TEM/EDX, and NMR to study the interface compositions. This will enable me to establish for the first time how the properties of SSE-oxide mixtures influence their interface reactions, conductivity, and performance in applications. Such fundamental insights will enable the design of novel SSEs with tailor-made properties for a variety of electrochemical applications. These principles include the mutually exclusive expression of antigens and the periodic, nonrandom switching of antigen expression during infection. Despite decades of research, the mechanisms governing the order of antigen activation remain unknown. \nIn Trypanosoma brucei, a model organism for studying antigenic variation, double-stranded breaks (DSBs) within antigen genes (VSGs) act as key triggers for antigen switching. VSG-repair tests the hypothesis that DNA damage reshapes nuclear dynamics in a manner that spatial proximity, together with sequence identity, biases DNA repair template choice and thereby determines the hierarchy of VSG activation. \nBuilding on recent advances in the Siegel lab—and leveraging DSB-inducible switching lines, established gene tagging strategies, and on-site imaging and NGS facilities— VSG-repair combines high-resolution microscopy with genome-wide mapping of homology search and a quantitative integration framework to determine how 3D proximity, sequence identity, and chromatin context influence repair outcomes. Scientifically, this will yield a model of VSG repair and general principles for homology repair-centered, non-model systems. Technologically, it will deliver an adaptable screening strategy suitable for genome tagging or inducible perturbations. Societally, it will strengthen the knowledge needed to address neglected tropical diseases. I bring a strong background in chromatin biology in divergent parasites and, under Prof. Siegel’s supervision, I will acquire complementary expertise in advanced microscopy, single-cell omics, and large-scale screening workflows.
