My fascination with supernatural creatures began when my parents took me to a theatre production of Dracula when I was eight. It is one of my earliest vivid memories, sitting in a dark, small-town theatre, equally mesmerised and terrified as the story of Dracula unfolded. That fascination has grown to encompass a myriad of creatures and led me to write Monsters No More: How We Came to Love the Denizens of Dark. This narrative non-fiction book delves into our contemporary obsessions with the supernatural. Visit www.kh1art.ca for a course related to this book. Why do we want to have sex with vampires? Are female werewolves different than their male counterparts? Why do we aspire to kill zombies? Why do we long to prove the existence of ghosts? Why have we vilified witches? Why do demons so rarely possess men? I take up these questions, and many more, to explain why stories about vampires, werewolves, ghosts, demons, witches, and zombies have captured our imaginations and hearts with an examination of art, film, and television created during this century."],"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publisher":null,"embargoEndDate":null,"sources":null,"formats":["application/pdf"],"contributors":null,"coverages":null,"bestAccessRight":null,"container":null,"documentationUrls":null,"codeRepositoryUrl":null,"programmingLanguage":null,"contactPeople":null,"contactGroups":null,"tools":null,"size":null,"version":null,"geoLocations":null,"id":"doi_dedup___::dda9129fa5d7f9924ee846a38efed03a","originalIds":["50|datacite____::dda9129fa5d7f9924ee846a38efed03a","10.7939/r3-18ar-ef73","50|od______1875::abe6d9d9ef10f2ebbb1f9ade0cb46d3a","oai:ualberta.scholaris.ca:123456789/19531"],"pids":[{"scheme":"doi","value":"10.7939/r3-18ar-ef73"}],"dateOfCollection":null,"lastUpdateTimeStamp":null,"indicators":{"citationImpact":{"citationCount":0.0,"influence":2.1921431E-9,"popularity":2.2912217E-9,"impulse":0.0,"citationClass":"C5","influenceClass":"C5","impulseClass":"C5","popularityClass":"C5"}},"projects":null,"organizations":[{"legalName":"University of Alberta","acronym":"University of Alberta","id":"openorgs____::57c282a96132a7f3d1dbe740ee8a7aa4","pids":[{"scheme":"fundref","value":"501100007201"},{"scheme":"fundref","value":"100006516"},{"scheme":"FundRef","value":"501100019556"},{"scheme":"OrgRef","value":"1765506"},{"scheme":"ROR","value":"https://ror.org/0160cpw27"},{"scheme":"FundRef","value":"501100000067"},{"scheme":"Wikidata","value":"Q640694"},{"scheme":"fundref","value":"501100019556"},{"scheme":"fundref","value":"501100000144"},{"scheme":"FundRef","value":"501100000190"},{"scheme":"OrgRef","value":"242057"},{"scheme":"GRID","value":"grid.17089.37"},{"scheme":"FundRef","value":"100008741"},{"scheme":"FundRef","value":"501100000103"},{"scheme":"mag_id","value":"154425047"},{"scheme":"fundref","value":"501100003179"},{"scheme":"FundRef","value":"501100019691"},{"scheme":"FundRef","value":"100006516"},{"scheme":"wikidata","value":"Q640694"},{"scheme":"FundRef","value":"501100000144"},{"scheme":"RRID","value":"RRID:SCR_001853"},{"scheme":"FundRef","value":"501100007201"},{"scheme":"fundref","value":"501100019691"},{"scheme":"FundRef","value":"501100006441"},{"scheme":"fundref","value":"501100006043"},{"scheme":"RRID","value":"RRID:nlx_10148"},{"scheme":"fundref","value":"501100000067"},{"scheme":"FundRef","value":"501100006043"},{"scheme":"fundref","value":"501100000190"},{"scheme":"fundref","value":"100008741"},{"scheme":"fundref","value":"501100000103"},{"scheme":"FundRef","value":"501100003179"},{"scheme":"fundref","value":"501100006441"}]}],"communities":[{"code":"uarctic","label":"UArctic","provenance":null}],"collectedFrom":[{"key":"openaire____::9e3be59865b2c1c335d32dae2fe7b254","value":"Datacite"},{"key":"opendoar____::7e9e346dc5fd268b49bf418523af8679","value":"Education and Research Archive"}],"instances":[{"pids":[{"scheme":"doi","value":"10.7939/r3-18ar-ef73"}],"type":"Book","urls":["https://dx.doi.org/10.7939/r3-18ar-ef73"],"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","refereed":"nonPeerReviewed","hostedBy":{"key":"openaire____::55045bd2a65019fd8e6741a755395c8c","value":"Unknown Repository"},"collectedFrom":{"key":"openaire____::9e3be59865b2c1c335d32dae2fe7b254","value":"Datacite"}},{"alternateIdentifiers":[{"scheme":"doi","value":"10.7939/r3-18ar-ef73"}],"type":"Book","urls":["https://doi.org/10.7939/r3-18ar-ef73"],"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","refereed":"nonPeerReviewed","hostedBy":{"key":"opendoar____::7e9e346dc5fd268b49bf418523af8679","value":"Education and Research Archive"},"collectedFrom":{"key":"opendoar____::7e9e346dc5fd268b49bf418523af8679","value":"Education and Research Archive"}}],"isGreen":false,"isInDiamondJournal":false}
